and it's a shame we don't. "Bend It Like Beckham" is pure delight. A wonderful, insightfully well-crafted piece about breaking bounderies and achieving goals. There are keen observations here about human values and perceptions. Granted, some can be viewed as formulaic, but the characters here feel very "flesh-and-blood" versus cardboard cutouts we often get in mainstream American films. I think of this film and I compare it to a similar film issued in the States around the same time, "Blue Crush" and find "Beckham" to be a vastly superior look at the trials and tribulations of "growing up female". I don't know why this film hasn't come out in the States or why it isn't even available on video, but I took a chance on ordering it based on previous reviews and was completely delighted by it. "Bend It Like Beckham" has a very nicely functioning heart and soul and its easy to see why it was such a hit in the UK. Versus the phrase "heart warming" this is a warm hearted picture that embraces you and takes you straight into its home and leaves you feeling effortlessly good. Nice one!
