I bought one of these to try in a glass wall light which I can compare directly with an original halogen 40 watt bulbs. It fit the socket with no problems and is only about 1cm longer than a halogen G9 which does mean the light pattern sits higher up the glass and the bulb protrudes slightly above the top, but not so much as my more petite partner noticed either on or off. It also gives a less natural 360 degree light pattern, scattering the light in several shards rather than a uniform glow. It gives a cooler white light than the warmer yellow cast of a halogen bulb and in terms of light output I would say about 2 thirds of a new halogen 40 watt bulb. So for those who are looking for 1 to 1 replacement, you will find differences but not necessarily big disadvantages with these LED bulbs. The advantages are hopefully longer life, much lower running costs and also safety as they run with no significant heat output which is important to me as the lights aren't too far from the curtains.
In summary, I am happy with these bulbs and as such have ordered two more for my remaining lights. I am sure as the technology improves the bulbs will become a bit warmer, more compact and brighter but for now these will do fine hence 4 stars.
**** Having lived with 3 of these replacements for a few months, I confirm they are less than half the brightness of 40W halogens. Am having to go back to halogens due to insufficient light output, hence revised rating.
