I read this book as it was a choice in the bookclub I belong to. I probably would not have read it otherwise but I am glad I persevered. It is a powerful story of life in soviet Russia - not a spy story but about the lives of ordinary people and how the work of the police was used in the support of the state rather than to solve crime. It is not an easy read but I am glad I stuck with it.
