This review is from: Book Girl and the Suicidal Mime (Paperback)
I had originally watched the 'Book Girl' film last year, and thought that it was one of the most moving anime films I've ever seen (watch it if you can!) but it was a long time before I found out they started as a series of books. I bought them all from 1 to 5 straight away, and pre-ordered number 6, hoping that they'd be just as good as the movie.
I was so happy to find that the books were better! They're such lovely books. Very melancholy and depressing, but in the best way possible for a book. It contained some real slice of life moments, and some passages that made you really want to cry for the characters, not because it was particularly sad, but because you could really identify with them and you just wanted things to work out. I also enjoyed the detective and 'who-done-it' feel to the book too, and I was surprised at many times throughout!
Just a really good read, and I would definitely recommend the others in the series. The only thing keeping it from a full 5 stars is the sometimes irritating anime-esque style; where characters would make little noises or sound effects would be put in the text rather than described (for example, writing THUD! Instead of describing the thudding sound.)
