This review is from: The Thoughts & Happenings of Wilfred Price, Purveyor of Superior Funerals (Hardcover)
This book has a lovely physical presence, it is pleasant to look at and to hold and at first I found the story equally well presented and full of promise. From the descriptions I could picture the place and characters and was interested in what would become of them. Half way through I began to lose interest, the characters did not feel rounded to me, there was little psychological depth to them, they seemed to play out their roles adequately, but with little real feeling. I never quite understood why Wilfred proposed in the first place, or the purpose of Mrs Prout and the necromancy. Was Grace supposed to have bewitched him into proposing? I am sure Wendy Jones can write well, but for me this did not quite live up to its promise and was not as good as I wanted it to be.
