In a genre (extreme doom) where there are only a handful of bands worldwide who are doing anything interesting at the moment, I was delighted and surprised to discover Atavist's latest release this week. Effectively one looooooooong drawn out 66 minute piece, it holds the interest remarkably effectively, and acheives the extreme doom 'golden ratio' of inserting enough elements of interest (acoustic instruments, weird noises, variation of tone) without diluting the extremity of it all by overdoing it.
So why only three stars? Well, it's not Moss for a start. Moss have unfortunately set the bar rather high with 'Cthonic Rites', so everyone else is fighting for 4/5 reviews at the moment. It's not mid-period Esoteric either, come to that. The other star they lose simply because I feel that there's room for more development in this most interesting of genres, and I'm leaving a vacuum which hopefully nature will fill with half a dozen sludgy, droney, ugly, nightmarishly repetitive epics with a little something extra. For the time being though, this is good stuff.
