Tyla Gang - Rewired (Jungle)
Back in the day, the Tyla Gang were one of the best live bands on the circuit. Formed in 1977 by ex-Ducks Deluxe front man Sean Tyla, they became one of the first acts to sign with Stiff Records, where they released the classic single "Styrofoam", before moving to Beserkley Records and releasing a couple of acclaimed albums, "Yachtless" in 1977 and "Moonproof" a year later, before splitting.
Now, after 30 years, they're back. Sean Tyla's written an autobiography, which should be a decent read for anyone interested in the alternative UK music scene of the `70s, and Jungle have put together a third album, made up from the unreleased recordings that should have come our three decades ago, plus various other radio and studio sessions. There's also a second disc that features a live show.
All in all, an excellent package and a timely reminder of a band that never quite made the impact they should've done. They were always a little too hairy for the punk crowd, and that whole year zero ethos was never going to work for a band who had their roots in pub rock and British blues. Still, times have changed and it's refreshing to hear the Tyla Gang again, and to enjoy them for what they are. If you were a fan back in the `70s, you'll like this release immensely. If you're new to the band, try and catch them live, then invest in all their albums. 8/10.
