Terrence Mckenna, The name says all you need to know if you are aware of his body of work. As much as his books have covered all of his Epistemology i think the internet via people uploading his numerous Video lectures on youtube has greatly expanded our understanding of his ideas but i think you have to read his books too and this in my opinion is his best. I wont cover the story as others have beat me to it, but this is more than a book about the experiences with entheogenic substances (although they do it a lot and to the limit !!) its also a great adventure story and in parts is similar to The Yage Letters by William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg (which apparently was an inspiration for there trip). The crux of the story which i found hilarious is that as much as they were in search of the holy grail of shamanic entheogens ayahuasca they stumbled upon Psilocybin mushrooms which were the main antagonist for most of there most enlightening experiences.
