This review applies to this novel and its follow-up "After Light". This is a rattling good read of the post-apocalyptic genre. I found the scenario and the events that followed very plausible. Indeed, as Iran threatens to mine the Gulf one might feel it is chillingly close to reality. Fast-moving and reasonably well written, it is unputdown-able, even if the coincidences stretch credibility. HOWEVER, and I don't think this is a plot-spoiler, the idea that all of this disaster was created by a cabal of shadowy international conspirators is absolutely risible. The conspirators are ludicrous creations and their motives equally implausible. Scarrow betrays his own agenda with a long postscript about how he got the idea through corresponding with what seem to be a forum of conspiracy theorists and eco-doommongers. It's a pity he went down this path. The scenario would be much more plausible and equally gripping against a background of a chain reaction of political, military and religious events. Nevertheless, I really would recommend these books. Despite my criticisms I was thrilled to know there was a follow-up.
