Customer Review

One of the best comic books of the Silver Age
This volume reprints the Silver Age Green Lantern's very first bi-monthly appearances, from Showcase issues #22-24 (September 1959 - January 1960) and Green Lantern (volume 2) #1-3 (July - December 1960). Each issue contains two stories, as they tended to do in those days, though the first Showcase manages to fit in three, starting with a 10-page origin story, wherein test pilot Hal Jordan is whisked away in his flight simulator by a mysterious green light to meet the dying alien Abin Sur, and be inducted into the Green Lantern Corps. There were 24 or 25 pages of story in those days! All the stories were written by John Broome and pencilled by Gil Kane; with inks by Joe Giella on all but one story, which was inked by Murphy Anderson.

These stories are in full colour, and look pretty much as they did when first published. They might feel a bit slow and `tame' compared to the interstellar mayhem and massacre that fill the pages of the (excellent) Green Lantern family of comics today, but without these entertaining stories we wouldn't have what we have today.

Showcase #23 sees Green Lantern's first mission into space for the Corps; Green Lantern #1 sees his first meeting with the Guardians of Oa; issue #2 sees his first meeting with the Weaponers of Qward, who are back again in issue #3.
