Bleak isn't the word,
This review is from: Run [DVD] (DVD)
'Run' was a very bleak drama. Well made certainly but I think this type of TV programme has been overdone. Olivia Colman is certainly the flavour of the month and she is OK here even if she talks too fast at times which I have thought in other things she has been in. The acting is generally good across the board but there are too many totally unlikeable character's and I ended up not caring about any of them.
The first episode featured two revolting yobs, their mother wasn't paticularly likeable and their father even worse. When a truly decent character was introduced and went out of his way to help a Chinese immigrant, he of course ended up being beaten to a pulp for helping her. This was grim viewing and I was disappointed in it to say it had such a good cast. I don't mind edgy dramas in the least but 'Run' left me cold.

Mr. C. Hendrie says:
Why bother reviewing the DVD you didn't watch, and are not going to buy, of a TV show you didn't like? Seems to me someone likes the sound of their own voice a wee bit too much.

A typically pompous reply from a reviewer that loved this drama. I watched it, didn't like it and voiced my opinion. Next time I will try and agree with your opinion if that makes you happy.
Dramas like this can be rivetting but this missed the mark and was grim, grim, grim. I didn't think Olivia Colman was brilliant either, she was OK and I do agree that the standout was Lennie James.

I am no Shakespeare that's for sure but I don't think I am a pompous and slightly arrogant twit either. Ring any bells? Was the question mark correct?

Ha that reply made me laugh! I thought the series had a number of likeable (maybe that's not strictly the right expression) if deeply flawed characters. I empathised with many of them; Lennie James' character was a staggering example in that repect. I also lived in Brixton for years and found 'Run' really captured the visible underbelly.
Valid review though, very bleak indeed. Happy Christmas to you!
