Customer Review

on 25 June 2013
Philadelphia was historic as the first big budget cinema feature dealing with HIV/AIDS - and is a strong work of fictional drama, but with some beautiful scenes - such as the slow dance to a live performance by legendary gay male accapella group The Flirtations in their original line-up, featuring HIV+ AIDS activist Michael Callen - who initiated a campaign advocating the practice of Safe Sex, and aggressively sought research and public access to drugs for the treatment of HIV and AIDS. In the same year (1993) the superb television feature "And The Band Played On" was screened around the world, and as a fact based dramatised documentary presented the public with a much more useful holistic view of the history of HIV and its impact on a variety of humans. The star studded cast of "And The Band Played On" all gave the performance of their lives with absolute dedication, and ensured that the public actually learned that HIV does not discriminate. The combination of these two films in 1993 was a major step forward in raising informed awareness of HIV and AIDS and in reducing the stigmatisation of HIV positive people.
