I stumbled across this title, read the reviews and took a punt. I am very, very glad I did. This is a gripping read. I could not put it down. Turse is pitch perfect; he sets the strategic context of McNamara and his process approach then frames the effect this had at the tactical level. The author then unpacks what this atmospheric meant for some (but not all Turse is clear to balance) of the very young American men thrust into the fore of a counter-insurgency having been trained for conventional war and the civilians whose lives were so shockingly affected. Incredible statistics are weaved with great care into the narrative and at points the impact on the reader is quite moving. This book is an excellent contribution to presenting a rounded view of the Vietnam War. Take a punt - you will not regret it.
