Although Jessica Biel is out of her league in this ensemble, she gives it a good try, and I was really liking this movie until about a third of the way in. That's when a truly shocking incident of animal abuse--or at least gross negligence--springs without warning onto the screen (and into the soundtrack, which makes it even worse) and then is dragged out for laughs seemingly for ever, and I never really recovered from the shock.
I cannot find entertainment in callousness like that, but people who do (like fans of There's Something About Mary) will roll in the aisles. But for me and anyone else who believes animals deserve respect and protection, it's a great shame. Otherwise this is a well-made and interesting movie, a surprisingly worthy successor to The Adventures Of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert, Stephan Elliott's earlier masterpiece. If that one appalling scene had been cut--and it could have been deleted without detracting from the movie at all--I'd have given Easy Virtue four stars, which from me is a high honor.
