TOP 1000 REVIEWERon 23 November 2012
I admit I'm a huge Neil Young fan, and looked forward to his writing a book, but thius is really special. Why ? well it's very personal, almost like he's having a conversation with the reader. He covers all aspects of his life, not only his music, but his family and his love and committement to each of them, his friends, his interests including the Linkvolt car and the music system which sounds like it will be the best ever, replacing the limited ipods and mp3's to getting to hear much more of the recorded work. The homes in the USA and Hawaii, his upbringing in Canada, his beginnings as a musician. This book for me is a great autobiography because it's not diluted but real, from the heart and life of one of the greatest artists of all time. He's open about times of writers block in songs now and then,to his interests in all sorts of areas well outside the area of music. The times throughout when he writes of Ben Youngs his son, one he calls his hero mand his warrior, from it his work with Pegi on the Bridge School. He comes across as someone who has a full life,an exiting life but also the challenges of a disabled son he loves so dearly,a wife he clearly adores. Lifelong friendship of musicians, managers, producers and those he meets up with, including those he has now lost along the way.
This is a deeply yet absobing read, Neil has an amazing gift as a writer maybe learnt somewhat from his father who was an emminent writer way back. This is certainly no ordinary story but written from the heart, mind and experience in a way very few books of this type ever are.The years and music with Crazy Horse,Crosby,Nash and Stills, the amazing musicians he's worked with, his passion for railroads, his archives, his cars,oh I could go on and on about this book. You may not be a Neil Young fan but I can't believe anyone would not enjoy this wonderfull book.Very highly recommended indeed!
