This desoldering pump is at the cutting edge of solder removal technology. The flexible heat resistant silicone tip allows the the nozzle to come into direct contact with the soldering iron without damage and allows the nozzle to 'envelope' the solder joint. This dramatically improves suction and therefore less solder residue remains after each press/action. Easily disassembled for quick maintenance. The ss-02 comes with a one spare silicone tube which can be cut to yield several fresh nozzles.

I mention both these models; the bad and the ugly in order to contrast them totally against the 'Engineer SS-02', the very good indeed. Without any hyperbole or overstatement the 'SS-02' is genuinely the BEST solder-sucker I have ever used. It is Japanese-made and formed from solid aluminium. Incredibly handy, it is small enough to fit easily in the palm and priming the spring truly is a one-hand or rather one-thumb operation! Its tiny size lets you easily get in to the tightest quarters and leaves plenty of room for an inspection lamp or mounted magnifying glass. Absolutely best of all is the tip; in a simple but perfect design the 'SS-02' does not use a solid plastic or PTFE unit but a small tube of silicon. This material is all-but impervious to the heat of a reasonably set iron (at least 350C) and you can rest it against the iron-tip during the full heating cycle. This is not only very convenient, but the elastic nature of the silicon allows an excellent seal around the joint so when triggered almost none of the vacuum is lost. What results is a perfectly clean join with no splash of molten solder to the surrounding board. I have genuinely had 40-pin DIL chips fall off without any extra prying or 'convincing' at all. Moreover the tip is replaceable and the pack includes over 7cm of spare tube. I cut the tip that was originally fitted in half, saving the other 5mm with the spare tubing and have not yet had to replace it. Further packs of these tubes are also available on their own (Two spare silicone nozzles for Engineer SS-02 solder sucker pump.) for between £3-£5.
An example of how good I have found the 'Engineer SS-02'; my primary interest recently has been in retro 1980's home computers. Re-socketing the whole motherboard of an "Atari 130XE" was a long, tiring and stressful process with either the 'Silverline' or the 'EDSYN DS017'. Even after much practice and experience I would say there was a 50-50 chance I would damage the pads on the circuit board before successfully removing the joint. In total contrast, when using the 'SS-02' the process went by like a dream. The perfect suction allowed me to use less heat which resulted in not a single lost pad and better yet no concern whatsoever that my frail, irreplaceable machine would function again once the task was complete.
At the end of the day I simply cannot recommend this tool highly enough. It is truly the best you can buy. It would be facetious not to admit the £150+ dedicated 'Hakko' or 'JBC' desoldering stations are superior in certain ways. However, in the field of spring-loaded, unpowered solder-suckers the 'Engineer SS-02' has absolutely no equal and comes at a very, very reasonable price. Buy one. I seriously doubt you will regret the purchase.
