Good printer, but bad scanner and needs Internet

It prints OK -- and have duplex! , the footprint is surprizingle small, the plastic quality is superb. Works via WiFi, as advertized.

The scanner is unbelievably awful lo-res, and the software for it is awfully dumb. Worst scanner in my life, I have found better one near the trashcan in Russia in winter few years ago -- no kidding.

And the "Big Brother complex" is annoying: you cannot run Hp setup and scan utility w/o Internet connection and being logged in your account! Which is ridiculos level of intrusion in my life IMO.

If you change Wifi, you must look on the Internet how to reset the printer to make it find the new WiFi. The instruction which you find is unnecessary comple -- press this, poke here, wait for that, expect the purple blinking (purple blinking! this thing blinks a rainbow all the time!), etc.

Other than that -- good.

Initially had a couple for issues with printer but tech support was excellent.
You have to get your head round how you subscribe to the toner based on how many pages you print but all makes sense once you understand.
Its a good quality product with some nice features, eg double sided printing.

I'm a seasoned printer installer, mostly HP and plenty of Inkjet and LaserJet models over the past 20 years. After reading some of the reviews on Amazon, I saw a trend of "awful software" and "really difficult to install the driver" so was expecting a fight to get this one working on my home network.

Not the case. I shall explain......

This printer is for my septuagenarian mother-in-law to use at her home 150 miles away, where she has Windows 10, ChromeOS and Android so I needed it to be quick to install and require minimum support from me.

Step 1

Unpack and remove the transport tapes. Install the paper 'tray' cover and add some paper.

Step 2

Plug into the mains and press the power button to wake the printer. It will do some simple tests for a few moments.

Step 3 (on a mobile running Android)

Install the HP Smart app and follow the setup process to create an account, add the printer and send it the wi-fi password.

You can now print from Android.

Step 4 (on a ChromeOS device)

Go to Settings. Search for "Add a printer" and find the new printer at the bottom of the page. Tap on "Save" next to the printer then (optional) tap on "edit" next to it at the page to change the name to something you will recognise later.

You can now print from ChromeOS.

Step 4 (on a Windows 10 machine)

Press the Windows key. Type 'printer' (without the quotes) and press enter to go into the printers and devices settings page. Click '+Add a printer or scanner' and then choose the new printer. Follow the prompts.

You can now print from Windows 10.

Scanning is a little more complicated but in ChromeOS it's a doddle. Photocopying is a single button on the printer control panel.

If you want printer that you can just use. DO NOT BUY THIS ONE.

After a stupidly long setup (49 minutes to set up), online, then on an app, then print this, then back to the app, now you also HAVE TO have an account with hp, which wants your number, your email so the "brilliant" HP+ can send you tones of spam and junk emails. All because i need to print things out at work.

If its not an easy set up, do not say that it is. If you are able to print with a cable, why cover the hole with a sticker and say you don't need it, use wifi!
Every time i use wifi, the printer prints less than half of what you send and just stops, turns itself off.

If you need a basic printer, this is definitely not the one to buy. If you are not too good with tech, Dont buy this unless there is someone who will be constantly able to help you with whatever may happen.

If you are super clued up on tech, then it might be okay.

Constantly Goes Offline

Utterly fed up with this printer. I have now had this printer for 4 months and if I wasn't past the return window would return. I don't use it that often (on average a couple of times a week) and am still on the ink cartridge it was supplied with. When it works it is fantastic - easy to initially set up, prints great and lots of useful features. Perfect size and features for a home office. BUT it constantly goes offline for no reason so you can't print - when the HP Doctor or HP Smart can connect (although often they can't when it's offline) they just tell you to re-boot router, re-boot printer, etc. I have wasted hours going through this process. The printer will randomly start working hours later (much the same as it randomly goes offline). So in summary not reliable for being able to print when you need to which is especially frustrating if trying to work from home. Therefore would not recommend - I'm considering just buying another non-wifi printer to have reliability of printing when needed.

Print quality is a bit smudgy looking in comparison to my 20 year old laser jet which was crisp

Support is good
Not overly impressed, every time I print a large document I get an email to upgrade my print contract.
I wish I hadn’t purchased it really I would rather a printer I can just purchase my own ink and get on with it
