Very good waterproof, windproof and breathable jacket, perfect for cycling
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 August 2016
I admit, Mac in a Sac isn’t the first company I thought of when selecting a new waterproof high-vis jacket for cycling and I stumbled upon their range almost by accident – but I am so glad I did.
I ordered a bright neon yellow jacket and was delighted with it on delivery. The jacket is well made, neatly finished and the design is the best I’ve worn. I particularly like the ventilated back which can be worn either closed via Velcro tabs or open in warmer weather and, even in the heaviest rain, there is a sufficient overlap to ensure rain cannot find its way in and trickle down my back. Further ventilation is provided via under-arm vents making it a very comfortable jacket to wear. The hood can be rolled into the stand-up collar while cycling then unrolled and worn as a hood for walking or other outdoor activities making it a versatile jacket.
In terms of performance, I have worn it in torrential showers with not a drop of rain seeping through and, while cycling the Taff Trail from the Brecon Beacons to Cardiff Bay and barrage, encountering strong winds in all directions in very open and exposed locations, and after a thorough testing I can happily confirm that it is completely windproof while also being breathable (rated at 5000 waterproof and 5000 breathable). The cuffs are lightly elasticated for a close fit and there is an elasticated adjuster around the hips plus a scooped back which conveniently extends to just below my bike saddle ensuring my bum stays dry while riding.
In terms of sizing, I’m a UK size 12 and ordered the XS unisex size which enables me to wear a chunky fleece beneath it. In order to wear something a little thicker or an additional layer in the winter months, eg a Craghoppers Compresslite jacket, then I would need to choose the Small size instead. All the sizings listed by MacinaSac are spot-on and refer to the dimensions of their garments rather than the measurements of the wearer. When not in use, the jacket folds into the supplied drawstring pouch for ease of carrying and dries quickly following a heavy drenching.
Almost all cycling jackets have rear pockets, if any and it is not conventional to have side pockets – but this is something I was specifically looking for and selected the jacket on this basis for carrying my compact camera conveniently and readily-accessible while cycling.
I have been so impressed by the jacket that just a few days following delivery, I ordered a second – another XS small in neon yellow but upgraded to the 7000-rating for use in even heavier rain. Living on the Welsh borders, we enjoy/endure a lot of rain so I always like to have a spare and would very highly recommend this range to all cyclists, walkers or anyone who needs a good quality waterproof, windproof and highly breathable jacket you can rely on in the worst weather.
Excellent customer service too when I had a query with consistently speedy responses and a most courteous service. This is definitely a company I will buy from again.
