My beagle tested the medium harness in olive, and my terrier tested the small harness in pink. These are a basic, strap harness, they have no fancy patterns, padding or features - but they are very good, sturdy harnesses. They’re a step in style dog harness, so they’re very easy to put on. Your dog just puts their front legs through the holes, and it pulls up over their shoulders and clips together on top of their back. This design is perfect for nervous dogs that don’t like harnesses that have to go over their head.
The webbing straps and the buckles and clasp are all of very good quality. It’s a very strong, well made harness that I trusted with my dogs safety. My beagle pulls, but the harness stood up well to her strength. Both dogs seemed happy and comfortable in these harnesses, even though they usually wear harnesses with padding. I liked the colours, especially the pink one. Olive isn’t a colour that I’d normally choose for my beagle, but it does actually look good on her.
The slight niggle I had with these is that I kept getting confused which way around these harnesses went as the front (that goes round the chest) looks very similar to the back (that goes under the belly). But I’ve always had the same issue with this style of harness - so I think the problem lies with me rather than the harness!
Edited to add - we’ve now also tried the large size with our Labrador and this size is even sturdier and stronger. Excellent quality of harness that would cope with the strongest of dogs. Excellent quality at a brilliant price.
This is a well made, extremely strong dog harness. Once this is fitted you know your dog is not going anywhere without your permission. This is so well made that it's very easy to slip on & off your pet, just guide the dogs two front feet through the harness, pull it up around the shoulders & clip into place.
The only possible weak point could be the plastic push in clamp, but that has been taken care of by two chromed metal D-Rings. The dog lead clips onto the two chromed D-Rings which take the strain off of the plastic clamp. There is absolutely no way this is going to accidentally come apart, there is no stretch in it either, so the dog will not be able to wiggle out of it if the harness is correctly adjusted.
Once the harness is fitted to your dog, adjust all straps until there is no slack & it feels comfortable for the animal. Once this initial adjustment has been made there is no need to adjust it again. Just unclip your lead, unplug the plastic clamp, then the dog can step out of the harness, to fit just do the same in reverse order. This can be performed in seconds.
The harness is very well made, the strap of the harness has been made from very strong soft nylon woven material. All areas that are stitched, are stitched in a square pattern then stitched from corner to corner, the end result is very strong indeed. The fixing clamp along with all strap adjusters are made from strong nylon type plastic. The harness straps are held together by two large chromed rings, these rings do not appear to be welded together but they are quite large so I can't see any dog pulling them apart.
This really is a strong but also comfortable harness. If your dog pulls hard, the weight is evenly distributed around the chest area, instead of around the neck which you would be the case with just a collar. This harness will keep your pet comfortable, secure & under control - Recommended!

Years ago, we just attached the dog lead to the dog collar and that was that. However as time goes on, we realise that for the health of our beloved dogs, it is better to use a Harness and to attach the lead to that.
Umi is the new name in Dog wear and the products are really good in a gorgeous array of colours. Something to suit all coat colours and owners tastes. • This Harness is very, very well made and well stitched. There are no areas that are 'sharp' to rub your dog. The webbing is strong and solid but is not stiff and has a silky, comfortable feel to it. • The webbing fabric has a lovely sheen to it and the GREY shade is quite silvery. • The Webbing Straps are fashioned around very strong and sturdy metal rings and D-Rings. • The Chest Strap is not adjustable, but there is there is plenty of adjustment to the straps in both the neck and the girth areas. • The snap closure is nice and sturdy and the twin D Rings that meet across the snap closure provide extra security when the lead is in place. The D-Rings are a good size on which to attach the dog lead. (see pics 2 & 3)
TO FIT:- 1. Undo the Harness and place flat on the ground. Place your dog's front paws one each side of the Chest Strap. Ease up and adjust the Neck section as necessary to fit snugly but not too tight. You should be able to put two fingers comfortably between the straps and your dog. 2. Next adjust the Girth Strap so that again it is snug against the dog’s body but not tight. Once correctly adjusted snap closed and attach the lead to the two D-Rings. Job done and you are ready to go walking. You do not need to remove the Harness when letting your dog off the lead. Once correctly fitted, it will stay in place just fine.
If you have a dog that is reluctant to wear a Harness, the best thing to do is to get your pet used to it in small bite size sessions, at a time when the dog is doing what it enjoys most. If your pet loves playing best, then while playing at home with the toys, then pop the Harness on BEFORE you start to play. Gradually build up the time your dog wears the Harness at this time so that wearing it will become second nature and then you are ready to use it every time you go out. If your dog is more of a foodie than a player, then put the Harness on BEFORE you serve the dogs meal, so that the food is the main thing and the Harness secondary. You can also do this when training with treats too. In the early days of going out with the Harness, give your pet a treat whilst putting it on and also once it is on and you are ready to set off. Use extra nice treats for this purpose, ones that your dog never normally gets given.
• This IS NOT a Dog Harness that can be used as a Car Harness. The chest strap is not padded and in the event of a collision your dog would NOT be fully protected. This is a simple classic WALKING HARNESS. • If you have a dog that pulls hard and you are not successful in training that aspect out of the dog, then you are better to have a harness that is padded at the chest, so as not to hurt your pet in any way.
At time of writing this Review, the RRP is £15.99 for this Classic Walking Harness. This is good value for this Harness that really is well made and should last for years.
This is a great Harness for dogs. Having used a Harness on my dogs for several years now, I would never revert back to attaching a lead to a dog collar ever again. A Harness is far kinder to the dog with absolute no pressure or strain on their throat
This is fine for a general walking harness for a dog who is already trained and is not having issues with pulling - but if you're training a younger dog or have a dog who has serious recall issues or is a constant puller then I'd personally want something a little more padded, despite knowing and understanding the tension points of a harness and lead combined. This just doesn't feel like a training/pulling dogs harness to me but much better suited to an older dog who already understands how to not be an idiot when out and about.
That asides it's a perfectly usable walking harness for a dog who won't be pulling constantly and will remain secure and comfortable enough in that scenario. It's a little fiddly to put on, but then a lot of cheaper harnesses of this kind are to be honest. It will take some time to adjust it to get a perfect fit initially too and I had to work harder to get this than I did when setting up my more expensive padded harness., but once you have a good fit that's it and it works as a harness should.
It has good stitching and a good tight weave on the material, all the clips feel secure enough for a a general/standard walking scenario and I like the grey colour which is very nice. With the matching lead in grey this looks really smart :)
This dog harness is delivered with very tight plastic ties around it and with paper and tape around some parts. Out come the scissors. Chopped the ties off successfully, then went to do the first bit of paper and tape. Unfortunately, underneath the paper and tape are some plastic bits that are supposed to remain on the harness. They cannot be seen in the pictures on the Amazon product page, which is why I wasn’t expecting them to be there. The inevitable result is that whilst cutting the first piece of paper and tape, I also cut through one of these plastic pieces. If you’re buying one of these harnesses, watch out that you don’t make the same mistake.
As for the harness itself, it’s a fairly basic model. The plastic (“ecofriendly” according to the product details, whatever that means – my council won’t accept them in the recycling) buckles look cheap, and there is no padding on the harness. The harness does not stretch, and doesn’t detach if pulling pressure reaches a certain level. This is presumably why the details say “NEVER leave your dog unattended with a harness on”. Given that when my dog is off lead, her instincts make her follow scents into dense bushes etc., that effectively means that when I let my dog off lead that actually I need to take the harness off her. That makes it not hugely practical, limiting its use to only when the dog will be on lead for an entire walk (which is pretty rare). I’d rather have a harness that detached itself if my dog got it caught in a bush. Thankfully, my dog does not pull on the lead, as this harness has no padding. I would imagine it could be pretty uncomfortable for a dog that does pull. My dog has used harnesses before, but doesn’t like this one, which I guess means it is uncomfortable even without pulling.
Are my expectations too high? I don’t think so. I’m not impressed by this harness. My dog doesn’t like it. It’ll do as a last-resort spare, but I cannot imagine it getting used much.
Umi. Essential Classic Solid Colour Dog Harness Made from soft textured nylon webbing, this harness is comfortable for the dog to wear. The design makes the Umi Essential Classic Dog Harness easy to put on, the way I do it is to lay the open harness on the floor in front of our Golden Retriever and then get him to step forward into the loops formed at either side of the chest brace. Then it’s just a matter of pushing the two halves of the buckle together. We have tried all sorts of harnesses for our dog including the non-pulling types but in the end, we always seem to come back to this sort. The Umi Essential Classic Dog Harness is well made from very strong and sturdy parts. The single buckle is doubly secure because the webbing either side is terminated with strong steel ‘D’ rings so even, in the unlikely event of the buckle coming open, the whole thing is still held by the lead clip around the two rings. Some harnesses only have a single ring and this is not nearly as secure. Adjustment of the harness is by sliding buckles on the front and back straps. Best practice, I have found, is to loosen the straps as far as they can go, slip it onto the dog and then tighten it until it fits right. You should be able to get all four fingers under the straps in order to assure it isn’t too tight. Adjusted right, once fastened this harness cannot pull off accidentally because it fits around the neck and behind the front legs (or arms if you prefer). In fact, you could lift the whole dog by the harness although this is probably not a good idea.
