I wasn't sure when I began this book, not having read the previous ones so it took a while to understand the characters. But once I did the whole story unfolded and had me gripped, literally until I finished it in one read. It's atmospheric, claustrophobic, goes from being a missing person/death story to something quite sinister which really gives you the shivers as you gradually unravel what's going on in that quiet remote Hamlet in the Pennines. I absolutely loved it. Kenny is a gift, literally, of a character and the mix of detectives blend in so well as a team with none of the old cliches thrown in which most recent detective novels seem to favour now. I'm ordering the earlier books now and the other series this author has written. A new voice (for me) in Detective fiction and a very refreshing one at that. Highly recommend.
Oh my goodness, Alex Walters! Could hardly put this book down, read it in double quick time. I was hooked from the first page, and the suspense carried on right through the book. Love all the characters, Kenny, Joe and Marie, hope these two finally get together perhaps in the next book, don't make us wait too long. There was just one word that cropped up about three times that was spelt wrongly, otherwise a fantastic read. Roll on the next Kenny Murrain adventure!
This is the perfect creepy, spooky, breath-holding, beautifully written book. It has everything you need in a crime/thriller/police procedural novel - and then some! Not only are we reunited with the magnificent Kenny Murrain and Marie, Will and Joe - but we have snowmageddon in a remote Pennine hamlet; a past that erupts to haunt more than one of the characters; a spooky gothic pile inhabited by some very weird sisters; Kenny and co stranded overnight in said house as the snow deepens, the murders increase and a mad serial killer stalks the village in the darkness.... Bliss!
Was undecided of the rating for this last book because the beginning was really slow and murrain was getting on my nerves with his visions and flashing lights behind his eyes. Nearly gave up reading it but glad I stuck with it because it was the best. Don't do spoilers so you will have to read all three you won't be disappointed.
I love Kenny Murrain He has got a certain edge above your normal police detectives Alex Walters creates a very atmospheric feeling when youre reading, the descriptive writing makes you feel that you are 'right there' in the story LookingForward to meeting Kenny Murrain again!
A great thriller with plenty of twists and turns one of those books you don't want to end. I have read all in this series can't wait for the next one I have read all six of Alex Walters police procedural books, if you enjoy good writing lots of suspense and a good story then you should read Alex Walters.
Never read this author before but now I have I most certainly will be reading him again. Enjoyed the pace of the book and just enough misdirection to keep you guessing and putting your own spin on it, just to be slapped down in the nicest way of course.
I loved this book. It kept me hooked all the way. I loved the setting in a remote hamlet, in a blizzard and the way the tension was slowly built up. There were twists and turns that I didn't see coming. It was all made better by the fact that it was snowing outside as I was reading it! I thoroughly recommend this book.
I could not put this book down once I had started it its a real page Turner with twists and turns I didn't see coming would definitely recommend to other readers and friends and I'm going to look for more books by this author
A thoroughly entertaining fast paced thriller, featuring the enigmatic DCI Kenny Murrain and his team. Trapped by an unusually heavy fall of snow in an isolated hamlet, with a vicious killer at large, Murrain's sixth sense is in overdrive.
