I was a huge train fan, right up until Pat shed every single carriage that was an original member, the final straw being the inglorious shedding of the wonderful Jimmy Stafford. I feel i buy Train records now out of habit and to keep my collection going. What this collection shows is the steady decline of a once great rock band into a middle of the road hallmark card soundtrack.
The album takes us through their career in chronological order and right up until 'Play that song' (at a real stretch) there is some redeeming hope but that's where i refund my ticket and step off onto the platform.
It's all very radio friendly and sugar sweet now, all session musicians and songwriters for hire teams to get that jingle on the radio, and that is pretty much the crux here, Train no longer write songs , they write jingles, music for shopping malls, elevators and adverts for hallmark. It is a sad decline of a once proud band, now reduced to a solo vehicle trading under the name but bearing no resemblance to that bands original legacy.
The fact the extra track is a cover of George Michaels 'Careless Whisper' featuring KENNY G!!!!, says it all as to what fanbase Pat is aiming for, Careless Whisper is a classic that doesn't need covered, it's a safe choice, it's a middle of the road choice, if it had been an original Train decision they would have covered 'Praying for time' but that's a ballsy choice.
I've given this album three stars, those stars are for the songs up to that point that Pat derailed Train, after that it's just a sad epitaph to a once great band that fell apart through the ego, control and greed of the lead singer
It saddens me to think what Train has become. Pat Monahan should have used a different name for the band after all of the original members left. I remember a band where all the instrumentals were different and out there. These days it's a pop group for fan mums and young girls. A shameful, money chasing imposter of a band that shouldn't be linked to the original that produced brilliant music.
Pat, you have one of the best voices in music, shame you are wasting it.
Train, drops of Jupiter, my private nation, alive at last.......real albums.......midnight moon, a great video.
Great Collection of songs to a point some of the latter tracks just seem to be popen friendly run of the mill. Still love these Guys but in my eyes (personal opinion) they seem to have Derailed of Late. All that said still some stellar tracks on This Compilation.
