Light festive romance
15 December 2018
Practicing For Christmas is a light festive romance. Olivia has the use of her Aunt’s seaside cottage for herself and some friends. The first to arrive, Olivia takes a walk on the beach, where she discovers a man who has fallen on the rocks and injured his head.
Adam left home that morning, when he found his girlfriend cheating on him, and, as he has nowhere to go, Olivia lets him stay the night. They have something in common; Olivia has just broken up with her boyfriend Chris, for similar reasons.
When Olivia’s friends arrive early, a simple misunderstanding has them believing that Adam is Chris, who they never met. Adam thinks he’s helping Olivia to avoid admitting her break-up, and the couple continue the ruse. It all falls apart when Adam’s ex turns up, two days later, but not before the couple start to have real feelings for each other.
I liked the opening chapters and those set at the cottage. However, I thought there were missed opportunities to develop the main characters. I wasn’t convinced by them; Olivia did not come across as a modern-day twenty-something, and Adam didn't come across as an MD until much later. Neither their dialogue or their behaviour rang true for me as that of two young professionals. Overall, an okay read, but it left me wanting more.
