Classic Gallic elegance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 December 2019
I intended to replace a pair of slightly perished Aigle Goelands I bought in France over a couple of decades ago. The boots arrived in their box, protected by tissue paper on the outside and cardboard formers on the inside, so they were in perfect condition. I was delighted to find that little had changed in the classic design of these boots other than the Aigle logo. The two white bands were still there around the top of the boots, as was the white locking strip circling the foot and the gum-rubber flat sole befitting a sailing boot. Despite their popularity decades ago, men's rubber boots in contrasting colours are so hard to find nowadays.
The new Goelands are proving very worthy replacements for the pre-millennial versions in my possession. The calendered rubber on the outside is so soft and supple that I almost forget I am wearing these boots. They flex perfectly when I use them to walk along the beach, which is as it should be, considering that these are France's favourite boots for seaside activities, "goéland" being French for "seagull".
The boots are lined with such soft material that they could be worn barefoot. They come with thick insoles, which are printed "fabriqué en Chine" (made in China), provide the feet with a snug fit and can be removed if more space is required around the toes when wearing thicker socks.
I cannot be certain, of course, that the service life of my new Aigle Goelands will outlast the twenty years of their predecessors, but I am very happy with my purchase and I have no hesitation so far in recommending these boots to anybody who appreciates the quality, style, workmanship and value for money of this classic Gallic design.
