Beautiful, moving and thought-provoking, Shallini deals with some really difficult issues here but with a lightness of touch and honesty that makes her story very compelling. She has been down to the bottom and struggled to come back up again - and you find yourself rooting for her all the way through. I found her insights into the Asian woman's life experiences in the West particularly interesting - she reveals the contradictions and difficulties faced by many women in her situation. Shalini is living an examined life - and for that reason, her story is well worth reading.
Always With You is, at its heart, an exquisite love story. Shalini Bhalla writes beautifully about the process of meeting, falling in love with, and sharing her life with the truly wonderful Jeremy Lucas. Theirs was a very special love and one that grew stronger with each year and with each challenge that life threw at them including family estrangement, depression and, ultimately, a life-ending illness. The author shares her heart breaking journey through depression and grief and how she made her way very gradually to the other side of these harrowing experiences. There are many moments of triumph and celebration too and, not least, so many tender and humourous exchanges between Shalini and her partner Jeremy. The author's personal exploration of faith and spirituality through all these experiences is one that many will be able to relate to. There is so much in this book - Love, humour, faith, family, grief, loss, hope but love and hope are the most enduring. I cannot recommended this book enough. Whatever you are going through, you will be deeply moved.
Shalini is my dance teacher and a good friend of mine, and I originally met her through Jeremy, who I worked with. This account of their life together, their love, their struggles and her loss, brought me to tears several times. This would be a wonderful book for anyone who has had to work through dealing with families or relationships from other cultures, or anyone who has suffered a bereavement of any kind. It is, and she is, a complete inspiration. Shalini writes with such heartfelt honesty, and such warmth, and I feel so very privileged to be her friend and massage therapist. Me and Molly love you Shalini, and are so proud of how you have got over all the obstacles and difficulties you have had in your life thus far, and with what you've achieved with this book. We know you have the strength you need to strive on, and achieve such good work with your sister, and all your projects in Kenya, and we wish you all the happiness in the world again as you heal and move forward. Jeremy would be SO very proud of you...BUY this book...you won't be disappointed...you couldn't fail to be touched by it, and it may help you to believe in true love if nothing else! xXx
An evocative and poignantly written memoir which takes you from the author’s childhood in Kenya, through early adulthood and the struggles to find and maintain her own identity outside of her Indian family, to finding her soulmate Jeremy and the deep connection they shared until his death from cancer. Shalini Bhalla-Lucas has extensively researched the issues which have affected and shaped her life such as religion, meditation, mental health illness and bereavement. At the heart of the book is her love of dance and the love she shared with Jeremy and the solace and support these brought during the darker times. The book reads like a novel and never descends into the language of self pity but provides life affirming hope for better times ahead and will be a source of inspiration to anyone facing similar issues.
A well written and easy to read book. Shalini takes you through the happy times of meeting her soulmate in Jeremy to the truly harrowing experience of depression and family estrangement. She writes vividly of the emotional turmoil of Jeremy's illness to the moving details of the ultimate loss of her wonderful man . Shalini is a remarkable and clever lady, she has been on a journey that many of us can barely imagine. I highly recommend this book , my husband has read it and both our daughters have a copy .
Such a wonderful, honest and inspiring book. I really didn't want to put this book down and Shalini's tales of love, loss, depression and dance are thought provoking, sometimes funny, and leave you with an uplifting feeling to go out there and live your life. Everyone should read a copy :)
This true story is an emotional rollercoaster! The author, Shalini, takes us with her on a journey from deep and encompassing love to debilitating depression and grief, with some lovely stories and tales in between. I finished the book with a reaffirmation of the power of love. Loved it!
Always With You is a heartwarming true story of love and loss which takes the reader through a roller coaster of emotions. Shalini through her own experience, gives an honest account of grief and how she worked through her emotions.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Shalini about engaging grief through spirituality - and the particular role mediumship played within that for her. Her book is a great resource for anyone looking to approach grief that way.
An amazing read, straight from Shalini’s heart, so relatable and wonderfully written. It’s as if Shalini was having a conversation with me, so heartfelt. Couldn’t put the book down and am so lucky to have met a truly inspirational woman! Thoroughly recommend the book!
