An improvement over the first design.

I held out on getting the new sonic screwdriver, as the Character version at least left a bit to be desired. Especially after the fantastic job they did with the 12th Doctor's sonic last year, and when compared against the American Seven20 design, this sonic looked very plasticky and disappointing.
HOWEVER, it was worth holding off and waiting, as a few months later Character quietly released an updated design with a few small but effective improvements. This improved version of the 13th Doctor's sonic features a darker wash to the paint which helps reduce that previous plasticky feel, as well as using darker and less noticeable screws. The once clear plastic used in the areas where the sonic lights up is replaced in favour of a better-looking, more opaque plastic too.
Functionally, this sonic remains much the same, with the same light and sound effects. Both the lights and sound are exceptionally clear, with some different hidden sound effects depending on how many times the button is pressed. Unfortunately, the rotating tip hasn't been added and the dummy button is still there, but it isn't something that bothers me too much.
As I've said, compared to the fantastic job Character did with the 12th Doctor's sonic last year, this one pales a little in comparison. However, the modifications that have been made in the updated design are a definite and welcome improvement, and I would still recommend this to any Doctor Who fan.
