LOVE, JEALOUSY & THE ULTIMATE END
19 June 2018
I first saw this opera when it was "streamed" to my local cinema in Plymouth - my first introduction to "OTELLO". I was totally blown away by this production, and everyone who played a role in it. It was amazing, Jonas Kaufmann took the role and made it his own - from the initial hero of the piece, to a man broken by jealousy. Soprano Maria Agresta as his long-suffering wife Desdemona was just stunning as the woman unjustly believed to be "having a liaison with another man", and Marco Vratogna played the "bad guy" with such evil intent it was chilling to watch. The final scenes were so beautifully portrayed, albeit the outcome was a foregone conclusion. The closing scene/s of the opera are played out in time to pianissimo orchestral accompaniment (thank you Antonio Pappano and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House) and were heartbreaking to watch. Congratulations to Kaufmann and Agresta for that never to be forgotten ending. I subsequently watched a television screening, and now have my own copy! I can't recommend this one enough!
