Part of the skill of delivering a successful novella (to my mind at least) is balancing the competing interests of plot and character development against limited page count. Try and do too much, and the story will inevitably feel rushed. Too little, and the reader struggles to connect.
For my money, Ms Burdorf has pitched this just about right. Wisely taking a discrete period in time, she nevertheless sets the scene, creates the tension, provides chemistry and drama and a conclusion which, whilst not what one might hope for, nevertheless seamlessly gels with the overall story arc, and leaves the reader hanging - just a little bit.
A lot of fun to read.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
