Wow! This book is a total feast of thought provoking, witty, dark, observational tales. Mostly they conjure up a vision of a quirky mid US world, occupied by fascinating imaginative characters. This is short story writing at its best. Highly recommended! If you want to dip in, read the lot in one go, maybe r learn how the master does it, this way s for you! Buy it for anyone who wants to write. They’ll see a style I consider very Hemingway, every word means something.
Steve Carr has had more than 250 short stories published in the last couple of years. One would assume this sort of prolificacy would mean his writing is shoddy and without craft – far from it. He displays a range of emotion and writing skill that should make many better-known authors envious. His short story collection, Sand, is well worth the few pounds (or dollars) it will cost to have some of this great writer’s work in your hands.
A provocative collection of short stories by an author who writes well, conveying his deep concerns and emotions through his writing of what he experiences and sees around him in today’s world. A book to carry with you for reading in those moments when captured in waiting rooms, departure lounges or aircraft seats. Recommended
Outstanding. One stunning story after another. Atmosphere in buckets. I recommend this. Some of the stories are truly breathtaking in conception and are as stunning as writing can get - thus the five stars.
A wonderful collection of short stories. Fantasy, gritty realism, horror, mystery, epic journeys and more. It’s a collection to dip in and out of and savour. I look forward to more opportunities to enter into the world according to Steve Carr.
This book is not only full of gems and written by a well established short story writer - what I like the most is - each story is good, and it's a book that can thus be put down and picked up, again and again, without worrying about forgetting if you remember the previous part.
Intriguing, imaginative and wholly compelling, the stories in this book are captivating. A master of the art of story telling, Steve Carr is an incredibly clever author who creates fascinating mini worlds within the pages of a book.
It didn’t take long to read this book...I couldn’t put it down! Beautifully written short stories ranging from chilling horror to tender love stories. Whether you think you like a genre or not, you’ll like it when Steve Carr writes it.
Sand is a brilliant collection of short stories that will make you laugh, cry, recoil in horror and, in some cases, stare dumbfounded at the page. I enjoyed reading it very much. I think my favourite story was Hard Knocks, but there are many gems in this book to enjoy.
