Outstanding performances, just as we've come to expect from Rachel Podger & Brecon Baroque.

The version of the Four Seasons on this album has not been recorded in the same dynamic, studio style sound of the La Stravaganza or L’Estro Armonico Concerto’s but are recorded in a more natural Chamber Orchestra setting, which I believe makes these well-known works sound refreshingly different. On my first listen, I have to say, I was a little disappointed but the more I listened to them the more they grew on me.
It seems to me this interpretation is probably closer to how Vivaldi intended them to be heard than many other versions but they still retain the ability to thrill, especially with the first movement of Concerto No. 4 (Winter) when you can almost feel the cold of the players and the chattering of their teeth.
The 5th Concerto on this CD (the E major Il Riposo RV 270) is heavenly and again sounds refreshingly new with the strings coming together to sound almost like that of a Glass Harmonica.
There’s an unexpected quality and sound in these recordings and despite my initial disappointment I've grown to love these Concerto’s just as much as the other Rachel Podger, Channel Classics, Vivaldi recordings I have in my collection. I therefore have no hesitation in awarding 5 stars to this disc and would highly recommend it.
