Unlikeable protagonist, unexplained plot u-turns and one-dimensional characters
6 September 2018
**Warning, spoilers below:**
I'm actually really sorry to say this as I truly wanted to like the book it seemed like a good, unique idea and I was intrigued. However, the main character is beyond unlikeable, it's unfathomable why she has not just one, but several men romantically interested her. She started off really strong but soon turns into a blubbering, whimsical, whiney, selfish and unkind mess that I found very hard to sympathise with, or even wish well at the end of the book.
There are also so many completely unexplained turns in the book - why does Esme's brother have a child that he kept secret from his whole family? For what reason? Why does Russ have to pretend to be the father? Why are Esme's best friend and flatmate keeping their relationship a secret when she would actually be happy for them? What's the rationale behind this? Why is Esme going through this whole single girl calendar and feeling stronger and better by the day - yet all it takes for her wanting to marry her lying, cheating ex is her mother fixing up a wedding setting! Suddenly the same guy who sent billions of flowers and was rejected at all times has his proposal accepted, with no reason given by the author at all. Nothing makes sense. Plenty of complete u-turns, so many things come entirely out of the blue and are extremely half-baked, they don't fit in and are not explained. It's a shame because the story really had potential.
