Poor translation mars enjoyment
11 February 2019
Having read two other books by Wohlleben I greatly enjoyed the conversational style as well as the deep insights shared by this wonderful author. Sadly I have been unable to find this in the current volume. In the earlier books the translator has remained transparent allowing the voice of the author to be heard unhindered. A change of translator has bought a more schoolmarmish tone to the writing quite uncharacteristic of the author if the earlier worksl are to be believed. Awkward and ungainly sentence structure mar the pleasure of Mr Wohllebens observations for me. Such obvious blunders as "below 10 degrees C" instead of 'minus 10 degrees C' the use of a term "hair ice" in place of the English term hoar frost and the invention of a word agrarmeteorologist in place of the expected agrometeorologist leave a lot to be desired on this translation. If it was proof read then the editor must have had a liquid lunch. It saddens me to write such a review but after such excellent work it has been a let down.
