Enjoyable but not ideal repertoire
on 24 October 2017
Although Jonas Kaufmann's voice isn't ideal for the French repertoire, being too heavy and baritonal these days, this is a mostly enjoyable CD, the duet from the Pearl Fishers with Ludovic Tezier being particularly lovely and one of the best versions I've heard. The Flower Song is also one of the best tracks. I found the voice too hard edged for O Rachel Quand de Seigneur however, and his strange pronunciation of some French words (a nasal Saeeint at the beginning of the the Pearfishers) and Pourquoi me Reeeveiller from Werther were noticeable. Still it's enjoyable if you like Jonas Kaufmann as a personality and can excuse it.
