5.0 out of 5 starsAnother great novel by Clare Mackintosh
11 April 2018
I gave this five stars because, like her previous novels, Clare writes with good pace, with an intriguing story to tell and some twists along the way. The ending is sound, and I appreciated the topical issues of mental health which were explored, running like a thread throughout the book. Like her, I'm an ex police officer so it's important to me that the story is realistic from a procedural point of view, and also plausible. My only criticism is that there was maybe one twist too many - it made me smile rather than intrigued me. I hope Clare won't feel so obliged to provide shock twists in her future books that they become forced or predictable. For now, she remains one of my favourite authors and I will certainly recommend her to my friends.

3.0 out of 5 starsThe ending completely let it down
19 July 2018
I was gripped throughout reading this book - it is the sort of narrative where you stay up til 2am by telling yourself "just one more chapter..." to see what happens! I was enthralled from the start to the last chapter...and then it felt so incredibly rushed and untrue to the storyline that my whole enjoyment of the book was ruined by such a poor conclusion to what had been an epic tale. Really disappointing

If you want a brilliant psychological thriller that has twists and turns at every corner, then this is the book for you. I found I didn't want to put it down yet I didn't want it to end. I love it when a book captures you and you can't think about anything else.It feels as though Clare might of left it open for another book. Each chapter is a different person's perspective. Its a brilliant read.

4.0 out of 5 starsIt's a must have!!!!

I love Clare Mackintosh as an author, I always find her books hard to put down. Having lots of twists throughout keeps me gripped and always thinking "good god, what next?" Some have said there were too many twists, I don't feel this way about it, as long as they remain believable I think twist after twist drives the reader on.
I would thoroughly recommend this book. The only reason I've marked it 4 out of 5 instead of 5 is because I didn't have the same "that book was utterly incredible" feeling as her first book. It's still a must have!!!!

*Alert: spoilers throughout* I think I liked this one more than the author’s last novel, I See You, but not quite as much as her first, I Let You Go. The twists and turns are gripping, and although I’d guessed the one about Tom Johnson, I hadn’t guessed the final one about the accomplice and had thought it was someone else. The only thing I think would have worked better was if the reader hadn’t been made aware that Caroline was still alive from pretty much the beginning of the novel; the reader should have been as shocked as Anna when her mother came back, and should have been left wondering if Anna was suffering hallucinations. Whereas, we already knew from Caroline’s chapters that she is alive, which took away that shock factor. Still a very enjoyable thriller, and I also liked the focus given to mental health problems and effects of grief, which are relatable for many people.

5.0 out of 5 starsA twist at the end I didn't see coming!

Another brilliant novel by Clare Mackintosh, this time focusing on Anna an only child coming to terms with the loss of her parents . When strange things begin to happen, she seeks help from the police to look into their deaths. But should she let sleeping dogs lie? Is she endangering not only her own life, but that of everyone left who is dear to her? This book kept me from sleeping at night, intending to read only a couple of chapters, each one leaves you with a question that you don't want to wait for an answer, but keep reading. The pace of this book is exciting, culminating in such a way that made me draw breath with shock - I wasn't expecting that! Would highly recommend LET ME LIE and look forward to Clare's next one.

5.0 out of 5 starsIntriguing

Another riveting thriller from Clare MacKintosh who never disappoints. It has more twists and turns than an Egyptian souk.

Anna has lost both her parents to suicide within a two years. On the anniversary of her mother's death she receives an anniversary card with the message 'Suicide? Think again.' This sets off a series events which lead Anna to believe that neither death was suicide. If this wasn't the case, who would want to murder her parents?

Told from Anna's point of view, that of a mysterious narrator and that of the retired cop who starts to investigate Anna's claim of murders the story moves at a cracking pace and at times had me holding my breath.

In true Clare MacKintosh style there is a final one, no make that two twists, that I did not see coming.

Highly recommended.

JB
3.0 out of 5 starsGood book with plenty of plot twists
3 September 2018
Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase
For me this book was ok. There are mixed reviews on it but I have to say I'm a little on the fence. The suspense was good but the plot twists weren't overly surprising to me; I had them figured out fairly early.

I thought it was really nice to have the mental health aspect within the book and in the end, Murray's story was a little bit sad, although I'm not sure what this added to the story as a whole.

The grief and experiences of a new mum were tastefully handled.

The one downside to this was I felt that the author had thrown the kitchen sink in it and I don't think it was all warranted, it slowed the story down and I felt the need to skip over parts because I felt a bit bored to be honest.

Not one of her punchier books unfortunately.
