Looks great - Star Wars fans will love it
13 January 2018
============= REASON FOR BUYING =============
I have the Sphero BB8 and loved it, but it's not just a decoration piece that I think looks stunning, however he was far too lonely so once I saw my fave droid being reproduced by the same company I jumped on it.
What I love about R2-D2 is Sphero took all the cool moves from BB8 and packed them into possibly the most famous droid of all time.
============= ATTENTION TO DETAIL =============
BB8 didn't really take a lot of effort to reproduce, I even saw a PUMKIN painted to look like BB8 and it was also spectacular, so basically the BB8 was great but not really something they spent months designing the cosmetic parts.
R2 is SO different. If you look at the individual detail it's incredible, they've even put the rubber hoses on his 'feet' as well as the infamous ports that shot out the light saber in Return of the Jedi when Luke was on Jabba's sail barge.
Heck, after that accurate throw R2 could've had a career in Baseball of American Football!
============= R2D2's LEGS AND HEAD ============
The middle (central) leg is retracted and hidden inside the main body when he's not on, and cannot be pulled down manually. The other legs canÕt be moved by hand either, and the head can be swiveled.
============= PACKAGING AND CONTENTS =============
As all these Droids, the packaging is really nicely done and make it look like the expensive investment it is. There's enough foam protection and lids and outer covers to protect this from short falls in my opinion
While BB-8 and BB-9E come with a charging dock (and a Droid Trainer stand depending on the model), R2-D2 (and the latter R2Q5) only come with a charging cable and nothing else, however the charging cable is a really nice GOLD Cable.
I am not sure why R2 got the gold cable and every other Sphero droid got a regular black one, but I am not complaining.
1 (AWESOME) DROID
ONE BLINGED OUT BRAIDED GOLD CABLE
============= APP =============
As with Spheros other droids, this one needs on an app for control and additional features.
The app is available for iOS and Android and itÕs the same app for all 4 of the Spheroids Star Wars droids – you just switch between them from within the interface.
When you switch it on you can either select the droid you want to control, or scan and the app will then show all droids in range and you can select.
As with the BB8 App, this is not a small APP so if it's a gift you may want to secretly download this to a device before giving it so the recipient can use it out of the box (providing you charge the droid)
============= FIRMWARE UPDATE NEEDED =============
Before controlling the Sphero R2-D2 you are required to turn on the Bluetooth and location services (GPS) . I also had to give it a firmware update before my first use, which required Wi-Fi and also needed the droid to be plugged in
============= FINALLY - SOUND FROM THE DRIOD =============
From within the app you can remotely control R2D2's movements, or choose from a selection of sounds and gestures that echo some from famous moments in the movies.
Unlike the BB-8 and BB-9E, R2-D2 has his own built-in speakers, so those sounds come from the droid itself rather than your connected mobile device. This is awesome as I hated the fact that the BB8 sounds all came from your device!
============= SUPPORT =============
You can go to the official site and get all manuals for the droids in PDF format should you need more help
============= CONCLUSION =============
Like the BB8, you will not play with it daily and it mainly comes out when friends come over, but I have all 4 on display and am really happy with them as a decoration piece for my home.
I added a final pic of all droids on display, I think they look great
There's 2 types of buyers, those who would rightly say this is not worth the amount for a toy with limited functionality, but the Star Wars fans and enthusiasts like me will say it's worth every penny and more.
When you charge him all his lights come on and he looks cool as you know what!
It's fun to play with, the sounds are awesome and it looks great, and it's ARTOO!
JUST BUY IT. I'll be reviewing BB9E and R2Q5 shortly (as well as the force band). Bring on C3P0
