From the perspective of the girl who is groomed into an underage relationship with her teacher, this psychological thriller could have been dark, but instead the subject is told from her adult perspective and that of the man responsible who from the first page we know she has killed and buried in the field at the back of her father's house. Why? And if he did die that day, who is now stalking her? Being ex- CID Mitchell writes with fluid authenticity and a prose that draws you in, leaving each chapter on a cliff-hanger. The pace was mid-range, but I raced to finish this brilliant psychological thriller because I wanted, hoped, the lead would be alright in the end. There were moments where the reader is hit with another revelation or shock that for me always rang true to the story. For such a poignant subject matter I didn't feel the emotion as strongly as I thought I would, hence the four stars, but this is not a reflection of Caroline's writing. I think I've just read far too many crime thrillers that cover gritty subjects. I was late to the party, but now I've had a taste, I will be reading more from Mitchell's library of revealing and well-written novels.
