A good read

A solidly written work from John Dean who adds an interesting ingredient to his crime novel with a storyline featuring illegal egg collecting which I found particularly effective. The protagonist has enough quirks to make him believable though I guess these days we tend to find someone like Jack Harris - with his volatile temper, love of beer and readiness to use his fists - a bit of a cliche.
At times I would have liked more detail and greater inventiveness in the portrayal of the Pennines, in terms of its flora and fauna. I also felt the trip to London could have benefited from more local colour since it was one of those rare occasions when the main character was outside his comfort zone.
