Contender for worst book
24 April 2018
Without a shadow of a doubt, the worst book I've ever read (I read a lot). Forced myself to finish as bemusingly selected for our bookclub, a relatively erudite group of blokes. Val Harris seems to have a lot of friends who like her work (well 12 to date...)
The plot is so thin as to be transparent, the transparency emphasised by everything being signposted long in advance, then re-emphasised repeatedly just in case you missed something the first second or third time. I kept expecting a twist in various parts of the tale - but there were none. It was like a GCSE mock-paper (emphasis on the mock) with no character development, cliched set pieces, terrible phraseology and ...that's enough. Our club reviews tonight - I may update with the others impressions, in case I've done Ms Harris a disservice.
UPDATE “The blokes” last night concurred - this was the most linear, shallow and deeply embarrassing novel (from a literary perspective) any of us had ever read. I should have been more wary when my Amazon ordered copy arrived personally signed by the author - a nice touch perhaps but also a sign of the first production runs ambition.
