Five SWINGING Stars! Intense beautiful jazz from drum master Roy Haynes and friends. "Roy-Alty" captures the influential and innovative 86 year old Jazz Hall of Fame drummer playing with fire and drive, leading a wonderful group, and playing a set of tunes that cut a wide swath thru his 60 year career as one of jazz' leading and most recorded drummers. Mr Haynes has played with everyone from Bird and Pres to Getz and Coltrane to Pat Metheny and Andrew Hill, as one of our true living national musical treasures who continues his relentless energetic musical journey on this recording. He is joined by his Fountain of Youth (Jaleel Shaw, alto sax; Martin Berejano, piano; and David Wong on bass), Marcus Strictland on tenor sax, a fiery Roy Hargrove on his heavyweight trumpet, and percussionists Roberto Quintero, Robert Rodriguez, and Craig Haynes. Chick Corea appears on two piano/drum duos. The 'best of the best' begins with Sonny Rollins' "Grand Street" and Chano Pozo's "Tin Tin Deo" that get a wonderful ride by the group, especially Hargrove. Miles Davis' immortal "Milestones" has a great muted Hargrove solo with Haynes using drum sleight of hand with stick-on-stick and rim shot/bass drum dynamics. "Passion Dance" has Shaw, Strickland, and Hargrove in a fantastic segment of solo chases, falling into a vortex of wonderful simultaneity, pushed hard by Roy. Stanley Cowell's exotic "Equipoise" gets great solos, especially from altoist Jaleel Shaw. Roy teams up with fellow Hall of Fame honoree Chick Corea in a great duo performance of Monk's "Off Minor" in a demonstration of unflagging inventiveness. What a joy to hear this ageless drum master relentlessly driving along players a third of his age in a lively, swinging and inventive set. Highly Recommended. Five SMOKING Stars. (This review is based on an mp3 download. 10 tracks; Time: 65m. Trivia: 2-time Grammy nominee Roy Haynes is a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner who began playing professionally in 1944 at age 17. His nickname is "Snap Crackle", alluding to the unique sound of his drum strokes.)
