Gus Keane makes for an engaging protagonist with plenty of idiosyncrasies. The locale of Salford is rendered with a believable realism and Bud Craig has a knack of writing an engrossing tale with plenty of well-drawn characters.
Where I am less impressed is with the information dump in the final chapter and the way in which his protagonist is almost a half-hearted and semi-detached private investigator, who more often than not just drifts in and out of the investigation. I'm comparing him here with Sam Spade who is never less than a powerful investigative force right from the get go. But then Dashiell Hammett was a very special talent.
Of the three novels in the present collection, I found Tackling Death to be the most successful. Fans of the genre will be impressed I'm sure.
