Wonderful quartets - not quite up to Britten or Maxwell Davies, but well up there. You do need to lose your preconceptions and just listen though, these are not easy works, though they do amply repay your attention
Grazyna Bacewicz is one of the lost jewels amongst the composers of the 20th century. Having gone through most of what can be found in the Internet I was very pleased to find this new recording. She has a voice of her own even though you can hear that the music has its roots in the same ground Stravinsky and Shostakovich had theirs. Absolutely marvellous.
After a dreary Saturday morning with Radio 3 (usual 4th rate works by first rate composers or first rate performances of 4th rate contemporary music), this recording dropped through my letterbox. I only ordered it yesterday after seeing reviews in Amazon (thank you reviewers and English Postbox). So far I have only heard the first two quartets but am enjoying what I am hearing - a sort of updated Dvorak (and mercifully shorter than Dvorak's early quartets) and a real pleasure to get to know. I look forward to hearing the later works. May I also recommend Maconchy's quartets - I have them complete on Regis but they are no longer available. They now appear to have been reissued on 3 expensive CDs. Shame.
