A DCI with a 'feeling' that is much more than the usual detective gut instincts. I love this sort of crime novel. I started reading it in the few minutes spare time I had, and as I progressed though it, it gripped me and I was forced to make the time to read it. The characters were real, I got into their mindset and followed their emotions easily. The switch to small insights into the personal lives of victims made the crime more personal to me as a reader, dragging me into the tension and plot. It had me on edge and kept me guessing. No spoilers in this review, so will just say that the last part of the book kept me up until 2.30am, I didn't want to put it down. Can't wait for the next in the series. Kenny Murrain is a new favourite.
This was a great read and I was hooked immediately. I really enjoy a good police procedural and this is just that, with a twist. DCI Kenny Murrain is a cop with a difference; he hears and sees things other people can’t. When he hears a woman screaming on Sunday morning he knows that something awful has happened but he doesn’t know exactly where. Shortly afterwards, a woman’s body is discovered in another hotel room. This sets off a chain of killings that Murrain and his colleagues struggle to understand or find a motive for.
I really liked the characters in this novel and the narrative moves at a cracking pace. The writing is excellent and the outcome is very clever. I’m away to read more books by Alex Walters.
Nothing is as it seems!!! The characters were wonderful, Kenny reminded me of the author Luke Delaney's main man Sean, with his psychic abilities. I thought it all worked very well together but I did guess the killer early on, maybe I can see things too! It was an enjoyable book, with everyone working together, even the different police forces helped each other, no back biting with the higher echelons which really irritates me with some authors, and the story was an excellent page turner. As I come from near Stockport, it was very interesting to me how the story developed and the surrounding areas. I hope there are more from Alex with the same characters. Off to read the next one now.
Plenty of interesting characters. Easy to follow. Got into the book quickly and couldn't put it down. Something of the sixth sense in Murrain adds a different dimension to the usual crime novel without being too supernatural. Without spoiling it for other readers there is a different take on the murderer. All in all Alex Walters has taken the genre, turned it upside down and inside out and started what is hope fully a series of slightly off the wall novels. Looking forward to meeting the characters again, seeing how they develop, their relationships with each other and Murrain's second sight adding that extra kick. Another author to put on my list of favourites! Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Picked this up as a freebie on Amazon, I usually am disappointed with free books and just delete them after a couple of chapters. This one I finished and enjoyed. Will probably buy the next one later in the year.
Dci Kenny Murrain is a cop with a difference he has a sixth sense which comes in handy when solving crime. Took me a few pages to get into the book but did enjoy it and didn't take me long to realise who was committing the murders. Have a read for yourselves sure you will enjoy.
So happy to have discovered Alex Walters, having read all the Alex McKay books and enjoyed them I thought I would give the Kenny Murrain series a try, not at all disappointed gripped from beginning to end. Good characters to build on and few nice twists and turns if you enjoy a good read you can't go far wrong with this author would recommend.
If you like/love/are addicted (like me) to crime novels you really *have* to read this! No, seriously. Late Checkout is possibly the best UK police procedural/crime novel I've read - ever. It's beautifully, intelligently written, with an intriguing, original and satisfyingly convoluted plot, step-off-the-page three-dimensional characters (no stereotypes here!) - in other words, an unputdownable page-turner of a book that has robbed me of my sleep this week! Can't wait for the next one in the series! Thank you soooo much, Alex Walters - you're a star
I really enjoyed this book. It's great to have a police team who seem to genuinely like working together and aren't busy trying to crawl over each other in a desperate attempt to gain promotion at their colleagues' expense. The story is very clever, and the end was a genuine surprise that I didn't see coming. DCI Murrain is a very engaging character and although this is my first book by this author, it won't be my last. Well worth a read
