A little rushed perhaps
23 February 2016
Now. I am a massive Brandon Sanderson fan - I have read his entire back catalogue, several of them more than once.
However, at the moment I feel like he is rushing stuff out to hit deadlines and the quality of his last couple of books (I include Calamity here) has diminished a little. Maybe its just the way I'm reading them but the depth just doesn't seem to be there any more in the same way as it was in the first Mistborn series or the Stormlight books. I feel like a few easy options are being taken in terms of plotlines to truncate the storylines and get more stuff our quicker - or perhaps to give him more time to focus on Stormlight 3. There are a couple of big jumps here and there in this one that I just felt could have been handled better given a bit more time in the narrative
He has always been quite prolific in terms of his output but I hope that he's managed to afford himself a little time now to focus on the next couple of books. Perhaps now the Reckoners series has been put to bed there will be less pressure on him to deliver to publishers and hopefully we'll see a return to form soon. Don't get me wrong - I still liked this book - I just left it feeling a little disappointed.
