A breathless and breathtaking thriller
12 September 2018
The King is dead, and the new Elizabethan age is ushered in with appalling, lethal smogs across London. Dick Bourton, probationer with the Met, starts to suspect that a serial killer is using the smog as cover to carry out his crimes, but has difficulty getting anyone to believe him. Bourton has personal problems too, especially his glamorous fiancee, Anna, who has rather a lot of secrets, and may well not hit it off with his mother. Those are just the bare bones of the plot. It moves at a breathless pace (sorry, had to get that pun in!) and is a hugely compelling read. While reading it, I resented the time I had to spend doing other things, and wondered constantly what would happen next. There are an awful lot of characters, but you’ll be swept along at such speed that it doesn’t really seem to matter if you lose track of a couple of them! I look forward to the sequel.
