Excellent little unit, but sadly missing Segments
10 May 2017
My old VDO bike computer had died, so I opted for a more advanced unit, without going over the top. Records speed, distance, ascent, avg speed, Heart rate, and stores all the GPS information which when synced with the Garmin Connect app on my phone provides all kinds of extra fitness detail, and syncs the ride with strava (automatically once setup).
The downside is that live segments are not supported, despite being covered in the manual, and having a "Segment prompt" function on the unit itself. So you can download courses to the unit, but not any segments, for sections of the course you want to time yourself against. The segment information can be setup in Garmin Connect (on a PC) & reviewed on your phone after the ride...but not during the ride itself.
Courses sync with the unit, but Garmin Connect states that the Edge 25 is not a compatible device when trying to do the same with Segments.
Garmin support is slow, and frankly, not good. I connected them via their Twitter page. They told me Garmin live segments are not supported, only Strava ones. So after setting them all up again inside Strava & linking the garmin account, again, there was no way of including the segments into the courses. The next support mail from Garmin stated that despite what the manual said, and what they had advised previously, actually neither segments nor courses are supported on the Edge 25 (courses very definitely are...I'm using them).
So the bottom line is...if you want a unit that gives you the headline information during your ride, and a raft of detail afterwards on your phone, then this is perfect. But if you specifically want a unit which supports live segments, this is not for you. Despite what the manual says...
