I heard an interview with Mr Long in the radio bout this book, and after that I thought I need to buy it straight after. It was good decision and book is well written. Find out a lot of new thing about London.
I thought this book was terrific. There is something from every layer of london's history: Roman ruins, Saxon fishtraps, medieval plague pits and a Tudor spike that played host to many unfortunate bodiless heads. After that gruesome interlude a Stuart pub and some cockfighting provide entertainment, as does London's smart clubland, if they'll let you in. The author takes us East to Barking estates, down into the tube, and home on a Boris Bike. The lighthouse at Trinity buoy - no, Mr. long, I didn't know it was there, nor did I know about the windmill at Brixton. Very satisfying, and so much more entertaining than those dry histories I have attempted - and failed - to labour through. Five stars.
