Buy it or lose out!
on 1 January 2015
I was introduced to this work in first draft form on Wattpad and when I found it here on Amazon I didn't hesitate to buy it and add it to my kindle library. I love the easy way J Vernis writes, spinning the reader into the past and making them at home instantly...something that can only be achieved with a thorough understanding of the period in question.
I approached the book at first with trepidation as so often books tackling the subject of Viking incursions into England are full of wildly inaccurate information and are sold on the basis of rather cheap violence and sexual content. I was overjoyed to find this was not the case with this book. Don't get me wrong, the book contains violence, sexual attraction, passion and love, but everything is handled with the fine touch of a skilled author and never felt voyeristic or cheap to me. In fact I became entirely engaged in the love story at the heart of the book, worried for the characters and am hoping for more books to follow this one.
In some ways the writing reminded me of Elizabeth Chadwick's more skilled works, but J Vernis has a voice all her own. The book is well researched, lyrical and easy to fall into and forget the world with. Vernis' main characters are complex and interesting and the plot moves energetically with quite enough surprises to keep the reader energized.
The only criticism I have really is of the cover, which I just don't think does justice to the quality of the book within.
I recommendation not only that you read this book, but that you keep an eye on the author...an emerging talent in my book.
