I read these short stories in between reading other books which I think works best for enjoying the tales - seeing as the structure of each story is essentially the same: Holmes meets somebody who relates their tale of misfortune; Holmes then travels to an appropriate place to investigate further; Holmes solves the puzzle. It's the content of each story that makes this book such a great read; each is a fascinating tale chock full of intereresting characters and intrigue not to mention the inimitable Holmes and his sidekick and narrator Watson. They read as fresh and exciting today as they must have been when they were published well over a hundred years ago.

I'd only read one of the stories in this collection before - The Greek Interpreter - so it was a treat to discover so many lesser known gems. What comes across quite strongly in this book is Conan Doyles' social conscience. Yellowface, a story about inter-racial marriage and Victorian attitudes towards it is a revelation. There is a horrible sting at the end of the book, which I'm sure a lot of Holmes fans are aware of, and which unsettled Victorian enthusiasts when it was first published.

I really love this book. The unabridged recording by Derek Jacobi is true quality. Talking books are great for when you want to relax with a good book but don't really want to read it yourself. Also, to have it delivered within a few minutes to my iPad is a fab service. I will be buying more talking books in the near future. Thank you, Kindle book store!

Have quite a few sir arther Conan Doyle's books, specifically Sherlock Holmes. Have read a lot of them but not got around to this one just yet. Am sure it will be excellent reading as always.

The short story collections are excellent for those times when it’s impossible to read daily, so don’t need to ‘back read’ to recall the plot. I also find them a tad more thrilling.

Sherlock Holmes, without doubt the best fictional detective ever, with methods way ahead of his time. If you have never read any of his adventures you are in for a real treat!
