Very good story, but short story format misses so much of its potential.

Another very good story in the Powder Mage world. However I am quite disappointed that this story was written as a short story.
Taniel is such an integral character to the Powder Mage series, even if he was killed off immediately in the next book he would deserve and need a better back story than he currently has.
The Fatrastan rebellion has been presented as such an important period in his life, along with his meeting of and relationship with Ta'Poel. This period could easily have filled at least one full length novel and still could, but having some of the most important initial events already covered in a short story in less detail than I would have liked weakens any future book.
I realise that Brian McClellan's focus is on the main series he is already writing, and the short stories are background snippets to add more life to the main characters, and it's a good idea. But I feel it has also blinded him to the greater potential of some of his characters and their stories.
