Great value and great for rats
11 March 2017
This 3 pack is very reasonable - especially considering a 30ltr pack of grey eco-pellets is about £18. I can usually stretch one of those out to 5 changes of cage substrate in the bottom of an 80cm x 45cm rat cage, and the same is true of each of these 3 bags.
Because the litter is compressed in the bale, it expands a lot when you put it into the cage. The rats seem to enjoy it a lot more than a standard pelleted substrate, and are currently happily digging in it, chewing on it, carrying it around the cage and rooting out larger pieces that are mixed in with the finely shredded card.
There is no dust, but as yet I can't tell how it will handle urine and solid waste. I will update the review as the rats spend more time on this stuff, but as it's made of cardboard and has air in it as opposed to hard pellets, I can imagine it may dry out faster...or make a soggy mess. Only time will tell.
EDIT - After a week in the cage, the litter hasn't become soggy or smelly, and the rats are still having a lot of fun digging in it and moving it around. Scatter feeding works really well with this litter too - the rats really have to work to find the food and it keeps them entertained (with the usual pellets, the food just sits on top and doesn't present much of a challenge). I'm very pleased, and will continue buying this litter.
