Mesmerising as always, with some of my favourite Zappa tunes performed live. MP3 version has clunky breaks between tracks though.

Here's the good news:

You get a full length (151 minute) double cd at a budget price of a zappa 1981 concert. The band features old-handers ray white, tommy mars and ed mann together with newer faces steve vai, bobby martin, scott thunes and chad wackerman. The performances are excellent and this concert was apparently voted best concert ever by readers of 'guitar player' magazine in the 1990s. Jazz guitarist al di meola guests on 2 tracks, steve vai plays a lot of electric sitar and the underrated ray white plays a couple of great solos. Zappa himself solos to perfection as you would expect.

Here's the bad news:

The sound quality is not very good, unless you're a scott thunes fan as at times the bass threatens to overwhelm the other instruments. The concert was broadcast on US radio and I would guess the cd has been compiled from tapes recorded by bootleggers. Please note these are not complete recordings - some tracks come in halfway through and there are brutal edits in others, probably where the tapes ran out. This cd is not a zappa family release but released on gold fish records, whoever they may be. The sleeve notes are perfunctory at best and even manage to omit bobby martin from the band line-up.

So to sum up, 5 stars for the music and performances and 1 star for everything else.

all stuff from the back catalogue is eagerly awaited. this is a stonking live performance. whilst the quality of the recording is not 100 percent this will not lessen your enjoyment of this release. move over apostrophe this is now m favourite zappa album.

The FM recording of Frank Zappa's Ritz performance 17/11/81 contains some unfortunate edits, but it also documents one of the very best concerts of Zappa's career. It is well known to collectors and has circulated among them freely for many years.

The person responsible for this release has no connection to Frank Zappa and has no right to be making money from his name. All they have done is download this recording from a Zappa collecting site for free and then packaged it and attempted to make a fast buck. Do not support bootleggers like this.

There are quite a few different opinions about this un-official release. True, the sound quality is not perfect but it's not that bad either. The vocals and instruments are all well seperated apart from the bass and drums which sound like they were mixed as one. There are also a couple of dodgy edits but overall an enjoyable concert which will suffice until they get round to an official release which will be without doubt 5 stars.

a very guitar fuelled album, great atmosphere, and typical of Zappa's music at that time. The album is somewhat let down by the sound quality but one would sooner have it available than not because of this.

More intense rock from Mr Z. Great set of tracks but feels bootlegy. However the live performance is great, although some maybe on YCDTOS series and in better quality. The length of the show and the variety shows just how intense the man was - you can feel the bands tightness as they're "conducted" through the exactness of the performance. Very good value for the listening experience...

I thought it would be in the league of "Guitar". It's proved to be wrong. The sound quality is rather mediocre. There are some good performances on both discs, but there many short fillers, too. I would recommend the CD for Zappa completists only.
